Conservation Initiative Provides $200 Million Lifeline for 100 Critically Endangered Species

Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund have launched the Phoenix Species Project, a five-year conservation initiative aimed at protecting 100 critically endangered and extinct-in-the-wild species across the world. The project has committed $200 million in funding, with each species set to receive between $500,000 and $1 million. The initiative will support local NGOs in their conservation efforts, reconnecting fragmented habitats and protecting species such as the Charco Azul pupfish and the golden-crowned sifaka. The 100 species, located in 30 countries, have already been chosen, and funding amounts will be determined on a rolling basis as proposals are submitted. This conservation effort aims to provide a lifeline for species on the brink of extinction, giving them a chance to recover and thrive.
