Cyprus Halloumi Exports Reach €350m Annually
WHY IT MATTERS
Cyprus's halloumi exports are a significant contributor to the country's economy, and efforts to expand into new markets could lead to further growth and investment in the sector.
What happened
Cyprus's halloumi cheese exports are valued at €350 million annually, with 45% of the total going to the UK. Sweden and Greece are the next largest importers.
Efforts are being made to expand into the US market, which is seen as a significant opportunity for product development and investment. The cheesemakers' association believes exports could increase, but are limited by the quota of goat and sheep milk.
The milk not used for other products is channelled into halloumi production.
