Cloudflare Unveils Fully Programmable Secure Web Gateway with Edge Compute
WHY IT MATTERS
By enabling inline, zero‑latency custom logic, Cloudflare gives security teams the flexibility to adapt to evolving threats and unique business rules without the overhead of third‑party proxies or delayed alert pipelines.
What happened
Cloudflare has announced that its Secure Web Gateway (Gateway) and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) services now support true programmability by integrating with the company’s edge computing platform, Cloudflare Workers. The update introduces a new Gateway action called Forward and a Custom Function policy resource.
Forward routes matched HTTP requests to a Worker as inline middleware, allowing developers to read, modify, or proxy traffic without leaving the Gateway evaluation path. This capability addresses long‑standing pain points for enterprises that previously had to deploy separate proxy or automation stacks to inject headers, trigger alerts, or deliver dynamic warning pages.
By running custom code directly at the edge, teams can eliminate extra infrastructure, reduce latency, and maintain tighter security control.
