What happened
Scientists have identified a massive crater on Mars’ moon Phobos that may conceal a dense region of compressed material. The composition of this material could determine whether Phobos is a captured asteroid or the result of an ancient impact on Mars.
Japan’s MMX (Martian Moons eXploration) mission, scheduled to return samples from Phobos, will analyze the crater’s interior. By measuring the density and mineralogy of the compressed material, MMX could provide the physical evidence needed to resolve the moon’s origin.
The mission’s findings will clarify Phobos’ formation history and inform models of Mars’ early environment. These results will also aid in assessing potential hazards for future missions to Mars and its moons.
