Afghanistan Faces Growing Humanitarian Crisis in Southern Provinces
WHY IT MATTERS
The expanding gap between humanitarian needs and resources threatens essential services, hampers polio eradication, and limits aid delivery, jeopardizing progress in southern Afghanistan.
What happened
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) released a September 2026 update highlighting severe humanitarian challenges in Kandahar and Helmand provinces. Communities report escalating risks from explosive remnants of war, food insecurity, malnutrition, unemployment, chronic poverty, barriers to education, inadequate public services, and water shortages.
The report notes 36 confirmed polio cases, underscoring ongoing disease‑eradication efforts. Additionally, restrictions on Afghan women UN staff are continuing to impede aid delivery.
Humanitarian partners are providing critical assistance, yet the gap between rising needs and available resources is widening, threatening to undermine both health and development gains in the region.
