UNHCR SME Program in Afghanistan Reports Positive Outcomes
WHY IT MATTERS
The assessment highlights the effectiveness of the UNHCR SME program in supporting economic resilience and inclusion in Afghanistan, particularly among women and displaced individuals.
What happened
A recent assessment of the UNHCR SME program in Afghanistan found positive outcomes among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) supported by the organization. The assessment, which included 443 interviews with beneficiary business owners, reported that most SMEs remained economically active and experienced improvements in revenue, sales, and customer base.
Women owned 65% of surveyed enterprises, and 37% of positions were held by displaced individuals. The assessment also found that SMEs contributed to increased household income and reduced reliance on humanitarian assistance.
Respondents reported positive community-level effects, including improved availability of goods and services and improved interaction between displaced and host communities.
