What happened
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has reaffirmed its support for Kenya following the confirmation of the country's first imported case of Ebola virus disease (EVD) from the Bundibugyo strain. The patient has died. Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya has expressed condolences to the family and authorities in Kenya.
An Africa CDC multidisciplinary team is being sent to Kenya to provide support. Dr. Kaseya will personally visit Kenya in the coming days to assess the response needs and additional support required.
The Kenyan authorities have identified 28 contacts, including family members and healthcare workers, and are searching for 23 passengers and crew members who traveled with the patient. Africa CDC notes that Kenya has maintained a high level of vigilance since the start of the outbreak. The Kenyan government has called on the population to remain calm and refer to official sources of information, while urging healthcare professionals to reinforce prevention and infection control measures.
