India Unveils Framework for AI Agents to Make UPI Payments

India is drafting a Unified Agent Protocol that will let artificial‑intelligence agents initiate UPI transactions without human approval for each purchase. The new framework, announced by regulators, will standardise how AI agents are authorised to spend on behalf of users. Early pilots will target low‑value, frequent purchases such as groceries, where the risk of fraud is lower and the convenience is high. By allowing autonomous payments, India aims to become a global leader in agentic payment infrastructure. The protocol will define the technical and security requirements for AI agents, ensuring that transactions remain compliant with existing UPI rules while reducing friction for everyday spending.
