Cyprus Commissioner Calls for Women’s Inclusion to Combat AI Bias

Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou warned at the Cyprus Forum in Nicosia that artificial intelligence already reproduces human biases and gender stereotypes, urging greater female participation in design and development. She cited how AI models learn from existing data—such as a thousand texts depicting doctors as men and nurses as women—leading to biased assumptions. Christodoulou argued that under‑representation of women in tech amplifies these biases and that schools must broaden opportunities for girls in science and technology. The discussion also highlighted the vulnerability of children to AI‑driven online violence, with Scientific Coordinator Rodoula Papalambrianou stressing the need for digital literacy and human oversight. Together, the panel called for a collective effort—government, education, private sector, and men—to shape technology that serves all.
