Moscow Airports Shut Down Amid Drone Threat
WHY IT MATTERS
The closures highlight the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with drone attacks posing a significant threat to civil aviation in the region.
What happened
All four Moscow airports have been closed to arrivals and departures due to security concerns. Sheremetyevo declared an air raid alert and began evacuating passengers, while Domodedovo and Vnukovo reported temporary restrictions.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that at least 11 drones had been shot down approaching the capital. The closures follow a warning from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russian skies are becoming unsafe due to drone attacks.
The airports have repeatedly closed in recent months due to the threat of Ukrainian drone attacks, causing delays and chaos. Passengers have been advised to be prepared for a lengthy wait, including on board aircraft.
