Amazon to Fund New Nuclear Plant in Indiana
WHY IT MATTERS
Amazon’s investment signals a growing corporate push for nuclear power as a clean energy source, potentially reshaping regional power markets and job creation.
What happened
Amazon has signed an agreement with X‑Energy and American Electric Power (AEP) to finance a new nuclear energy facility in Fairbanks, Sullivan County, Indiana. The plant would replace the decommissioned Breed Generating Station and could supply up to 960 megawatts of carbon‑free power to the regional grid and Amazon’s data centers.
The project would involve building 12 Xe‑100 small modular reactors, a technology that remains unproven. Amazon estimates the venture could create roughly 1,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent positions, though no construction or operational timeline has been announced.
The facility represents a significant shift toward low‑carbon energy for Amazon’s infrastructure.
