US Leaders Sign AI Accord, But Americans Remain Skeptical
WHY IT MATTERS
The US needs to address Americans' concerns about AI to remain competitive in the global AI race. Building trust in AI requires governance capacity, including independent evaluation, accountability, and AI literacy. The federal government and companies must work together to establish institutions and standards that allow powerful technologies to be trusted and adopted at scale.
What happened
The leaders of major tech companies, including Anthropic, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Nvidia, and xAI, have signed a voluntary accord on artificial intelligence with President Trump. The agreement aims to strengthen internal controls, independent outside evaluation, and board-level review.
However, a recent EqualAI survey found that 46% of Americans are uncomfortable with companies using AI in a way that involves them or their data, despite 71% saying a positive experience with an AI system would increase their confidence in it. To build trust, experts recommend making AI visible, establishing independent evaluation, creating a system to identify and handle significant AI incidents, and requiring accountability.
Companies and the federal government must work together to establish governance capacity and let AI scale.
