American Airlines Expands Starlink Wi-Fi Plans to Entire Mainline Fleet
WHY IT MATTERS
This expansion of Starlink Wi-Fi on American Airlines' mainline fleet will enhance the in-flight experience for passengers, particularly on long international routes, and set a new standard for airline connectivity.
What happened
American Airlines has announced plans to equip its entire mainline fleet with Starlink Wi-Fi, more than doubling the initial number of aircraft slated for the upgrade. The installations, set to begin in early 2027, will provide high-speed internet to over 1,000 planes, including Boeing jets that currently have legacy service from Panasonic. This move is expected to significantly improve connectivity on long international routes.
American's chief customer officer, Heather Garboden, noted that dependable connectivity can make a meaningful difference in how customers spend their time in the air. The Starlink service will also provide a foundation for future innovations on board. The airline's loyalty program members will continue to enjoy free connectivity.
This expansion follows a growing trend of U. S. carriers partnering with SpaceX's Starlink for on-board Wi-Fi, with United Airlines and Alaska Airlines already installing the technology on their planes.
