Cyprus Expands Animal Welfare Awareness Program to More Schools on World Animal Day
WHY IT MATTERS
By instilling respect for animals from a young age, the programme aims to curb stray and abused animals in Cyprus, strengthen legal protection, and foster a society where conscience guides humane treatment.
What happened
During a World Animal Day visit to Aglandjia’s Fourth Primary School, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis announced the expansion of Cyprus’s animal‑welfare awareness programme, which began in 2023. The initiative, run jointly with the Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner Ilias Myrianthous and the education ministry, will reach more schools and pupils across the country.
At the event, teacher Georgia Solomou showcased last year’s “Lessons from the Dog” project, where students and parents explored companion‑animal rights through hands‑on activities. Pupils watched audiovisual material, discussed questions, and met Shelby, a guide dog, who demonstrated her work and need for rest.
Senekis stressed that protecting animals requires awareness, prevention, and stronger enforcement of legislation, while Myrianthous urged citizens to take personal responsibility.
