Anthropic CEO Urges AI Industry to Slow Pace, Gains Support from Musk and Altman
WHY IT MATTERS
By calling for a slowdown and a kill switch, the industry and lawmakers signal that unchecked AI growth could threaten national security and human control, prompting urgent regulatory action.
What happened
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay on Saturday urging the AI sector to slow its development pace, warning that rapid progress could outstrip human control. He called for wiser use of the time gained and highlighted the need for a kill switch. The appeal was echoed by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who posted “Dario is right,” and by OpenAI chief Sam Altman, who wrote “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier.”
Critics argue voluntary measures may be insufficient. Former OpenAI researcher Daniel Kokotajlo warned that advanced systems could become autonomous and threaten humanity, calling for more radical safeguards.
Lawmakers, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, have urged Congress to convene a special session on AI, stressing the need for accountability and a kill switch to prevent misuse.
