Supernumerary Rainbows Captured over New Jersey
WHY IT MATTERS
The discovery of supernumerary rainbows provides insight into the wave nature of light and the behavior of water droplets in the atmosphere.
What happened
A photographer and his daughter captured a rare phenomenon of supernumerary rainbows over the Jersey Shore in New Jersey, USA, after the remnants of Hurricane Florence passed through in 2018.
The vibrant rainbows, which faded in and out over a half hour, were formed by sunlight reflecting and interfering with falling water droplets of nearly the same size.
This wave phenomenon was considered early evidence of light's wave nature in the early 1800s.
