Philippines Supreme Court Associate Justice Candidates Announced

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has released the list of 19 candidates for the next Supreme Court (SC) associate justice position. The candidates include incumbent justices of the Court of Appeals and other government officials. The applicants will face public interviews on October 13 and 15 as part of the council's selection process. The JBC also released the names of other candidates who had applied in 2025 but will not participate in the current schedule. The new associate justice will be appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. after the JBC transmits a short list of at least three applicants to Malacañang. The retirement of Associate Justice Amy Lazaro Javier will pave the way for Marcos' second appointment to the SC. Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo is also set to retire on November 6, and the JBC will hold the same selection process to screen the candidates for the next chief magistrate.
