Apple Introduces ‘Reference Image’ Feature to Verify Photo Authenticity on iPhone 18 Pro

Apple will launch a new camera mode called “Reference Image” with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max later this month. The feature uses the phone’s new sensor to sign every pixel when the camera is set to Reference mode. The signed data is sent to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, which creates an unalterable reference image stored in the Photos app. Users can then compare this reference image with other versions of the same photo to detect any edits or manipulations. The feature is designed to provide a verifiable record that a photo was taken in its original state, offering a tool for authenticity checks in an era of AI‑generated imagery.
