Ariane 6 Launches MTG-I2 Satellite for Enhanced Weather Forecasting

What happened
The European Space Agency's Ariane 6 rocket successfully launched the Meteosat Third Generation-Imager2 (MTG-I2) satellite on August 27, 2026, from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. The MTG-I2 satellite is part of the MTG constellation for Eumetsat and will provide high-resolution images for weather forecasting in Europe.
The satellite carries two instruments: the Lightning Imager and the Flexible Combined Imager. The Lightning Imager continuously monitors for lightning, while the Flexible Combined Imager builds a picture of fast-evolving weather systems and issues timely weather warnings.
This launch marks the ninth flight of the Ariane 6 rocket and the first mission to a geostationary transfer orbit. The Ariane 6 rocket was configured with two P120C-based solid-propellant rocket motors for this launch.
