Artificial Mangrove Roots Offer Coastal Defense in Thailand
WHY IT MATTERS
This innovative coastal defense system could provide a much-needed solution for communities affected by erosion in Thailand's Chao Phraya River Delta.
What happened
Residents of Phra Samut Chedi, a district in Thailand's Chao Phraya River Delta, have long struggled with coastal erosion. A new study suggests a nature-inspired system of artificial mangrove roots could provide relief.
The system, trialed at 11 sites over 15 months, encouraged sediment deposition at 10 sites, with retention ranging from 16-88 centimeters. The researchers say this could help stabilize the shoreline and function as a hybrid nature-based solution.
Butsawan Bidorn, senior author of the study, emphasized the need for rapid and accessible solutions in the dynamic Chao Phraya Delta. The system's potential effectiveness will depend on localized conditions and further research is needed to confirm its viability.
