World Marathon Champion Jepchirchir Provisionally Suspended Over EPO Positive
WHY IT MATTERS
The suspension threatens to strip Jepchirchir of her Sydney title, reshapes the podium, and underscores the persistent doping challenge within Kenyan distance running, affecting the sport’s integrity.
What happened
Kenyan world marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after an out‑of‑competition sample taken in Kenya returned a positive result for the banned blood‑booster EPO. The finding came from a test conducted before her August Sydney Marathon win, where she finished 2:18:31, more than three minutes ahead of the field.
Jepchirchir, 33, is a decorated athlete with gold from the Tokyo 2021 Games and major marathon victories in New York (2021), Boston (2022), London (2024) and Sydney (2026). The AIU’s statement notes that the suspension follows a pattern of doping violations among Kenyan runners, with over 140 athletes sanctioned since 2017.
The Sydney Marathon organizers expressed disappointment, emphasizing their commitment to clean sport. Her agent, Gianni Demadonna, called for disqualification of any athlete using performance‑enhancing drugs.
