EU Commission Reaffirms Focus on Canada for Associate Membership, Dismisses Australian Speculation

The European Commission has clarified that its newly announced “associate membership” concept will be pursued only with Canada, despite speculation that Australia might follow. Commission spokesperson Arianna Podestà told reporters in Brussels that the EU’s intention is to deepen ties with Ottawa, and that the idea of extending the status to other countries is “pure speculation.” She also dismissed the possibility that the upcoming meeting between Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the UN General Assembly would open a dialogue on associate membership. The Commission is currently working with member states and Canadian partners to define the practical framework of the concept, according to spokesperson Olof Gill. No further steps have been announced for Australia or New Zealand at this time.
