What happened
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a 30‑day extension to the public comment period for its July 31, 2026 notice on the Automated Vehicle (AV) Framework. The extension follows a request from the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which urged more time for stakeholders to review interim guidance on commercial deployment exemptions for automated vehicles.
The comment period, originally set to close on August 31, 2026, will now end on September 30, 2026.
The agency invites manufacturers, technology firms, and other interested parties to submit feedback on the proposed guidance before the new deadline.
