Bangladesh Sees Rapid Dengue Surge, Hospital Admissions Double in August

Bangladesh’s 2026 dengue outbreak has accelerated sharply, with more than 51,000 cases and 149 deaths nationwide by 13 September. Between 8 and 14 September alone, 8,000 new cases and 16 deaths were reported, pushing total new cases in September to 15,000 and deaths to 52 by 14 September. Hospital admissions spiked to an average of 1,200 per day in the first two weeks of September, while August admissions reached 20,536—more than double July’s 9,206. Dhaka Division alone accounted for 18,209 cases, about 40 % of the national total. The surge has forced hospitals to juggle dengue and measles patients, limiting ward capacity and complicating triage. Health authorities warn that continued wet weather and gaps in vector control will likely drive another sharp rise over the next two months. In response, the government has launched a three‑month awareness and cleanliness campaign, weekly vector‑control drives, mobile court inspections, and established dengue corners, a standby field hospital, and free testing. International partners have supplied 29,375–67,375 NS1 test kits and 50 apheresis kits to strengthen surveillance and treatment, while updated guidelines and training sessions have been rolled out nationwide.
