U.S. Treasury Sees Iran Running Out of Oil, Trims Trade Options
WHY IT MATTERS
The rapid depletion of Iran’s oil exports signals a tightening U.S. economic squeeze that could reshape regional trade and influence future diplomatic negotiations.
What happened
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Iran will finish its remaining oil shipments to China within two weeks, leaving Tehran with no oil to trade as the Trump administration’s Operation Economic Outcast tightens its blockade. Bessent said only about 15 million barrels remain in transit, and that the U.
S. has already moved more than a billion barrels out of Iranian hands.
President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s latest proposal, calling it an overplayed hand, and said he expects further talks this week. Bessent emphasized that the isolation is intended to pressure Iran into sticking to any future deal, should one be reached.
