Ateneo Study Uses Photovoice to Reveal Complex Lives of Filipino Teen Parents
WHY IT MATTERS
The findings illuminate how teenage parenthood intertwines with identity, relationships, and structural constraints, guiding more inclusive and effective support programs for young parents in the Philippines.
What happened
A new study by Ateneo de Manila University used a photovoice method to capture the lived experiences of nine Filipino teenage parents aged 15 to 20 in Central Luzon. Participants photographed and narrated their daily realities, highlighting themes such as managing partner conflict, peer support, family strain, shifting adolescent priorities, balancing education or work, and the desire for better parenting skills.
The research found that teenage parents navigate these challenges differently—some continue schooling or work, others seek to improve caregiving. Fathers emerged as both sources of stress and support, underscoring the need for gender‑responsive programs that involve young fathers and address traditional gender norms.
The study calls for accessible counseling, healthier communication, and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education to support these young parents.
