Bali Firefly Conservation Effort Aims to Restore Vanishing Glow

On Indonesia’s rapidly developing island of Bali, fireflies are disappearing as habitat loss, light pollution, pesticide use and climate change erode their numbers. In 2020, local conservationist Wayan Wardika launched Bring Back the Light, Indonesia’s only firefly conservation initiative. Wardika and a small team of scientists breed fireflies in captivity with the goal of reintroducing them into the wild. Their work has highlighted that sustainable population growth depends on protecting natural habitats. Wardika is now urging neighboring farmers to abandon chemical pesticides and adopt organic practices, hoping to create safer environments for fireflies to thrive again.
