UK Keeps Chinese EV Tariffs Under Review Amid EU ‘Buy European’ Push
WHY IT MATTERS
The UK’s tariff stance and potential exclusion from the EU’s Buy European programme could reshape trade flows, affect billions in EU economic activity, and influence the future of UK‑EU industrial cooperation.
What happened
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds confirmed that the United Kingdom is keeping tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles ‘under review’ as it seeks inclusion in the European Union’s new Buy European industrial programme. Brussels has urged the UK to raise tariffs to prevent Chinese‑subsidised EVs from entering the single market, while the UK stresses its export‑oriented industry and the risk of retaliatory action.
Reynolds said the UK remains open to Chinese manufacturers setting up production in Britain, noting that a Chinese EV‑maker has already signed an agreement with Nissan to use a Sunderland plant. Excluding UK supply chains from the programme could cost the EU €24 billion in economic activity, a warning from the SMMT.
The dispute over tariffs and supply‑chain inclusion may delay the upcoming EU‑UK trade summit, adding uncertainty for businesses.
