British Airways 'Balances' US Growth by Increasing Flights to Existing Destinations
WHY IT MATTERS
This move highlights British Airways' focus on optimizing its existing network and potentially leaving room for other European airlines to expand into new US markets.
What happened
British Airways, the European airline with the most US flights, is focusing on growing its presence in existing markets rather than adding new routes. The airline will increase flights from its London Heathrow hub to four US destinations in summer 2027: Cincinnati, Las Vegas, St.
Louis, and San Francisco. This move comes as competitors such as Air France, American Airlines, and Lufthansa add new routes to US cities.
British Airways' chief planning and strategy officer, Neil Chernoff, cited the need to balance transatlantic expansion with that of fellow International Airlines Group airlines, Aer Lingus and Iberia. While the airline is not ruling out expanding to new secondary US cities, it is currently prioritizing its existing routes.
