Cyprus and Europe's Digital Euro: Strengthening Resilience and Facilitating Payments
WHY IT MATTERS
The digital euro has the potential to strengthen Europe's monetary sovereignty, counterbalance dependence on non-European payment providers, and create new opportunities for innovation and competition in the payments ecosystem.
What happened
Cyprus has long been a hub of connectivity and exchange, and its history has taught the importance of openness and resilience. In today's digital age, the Central Bank of Cyprus is advocating for the strategic value of a digital euro, which would adapt central bank money to a digital world, facilitate payments across Europe, strengthen resilience and strategic autonomy, and support innovation and competition.
The digital euro would provide a pan-European means of payment, ensure a high degree of privacy, and offer offline functionality.
Cyprus is actively participating in the Digital Euro pilot activities, demonstrating its expertise in digital payments and its contribution to shaping future solutions.
