What happened
A food security update from the Famine Early Warning System Network indicates that a prolonged lean season is expected in Burkina Faso due to delayed planting. In the Karo Peli province, Crisis (Phase 3) results are expected to persist until September.
In other provinces with high security challenges, Stress (Phase 2) results are expected to continue until September. The delayed planting and irregular rainfall have reduced the area dedicated to cereal production compared to the previous season.
The expected prolonged lean season will impact access to fresh produce, particularly in central, northern, and western regions.
