British Columbia Sues OpenAI in U.S. Court Over Failure to Flag Shooter’s ChatGPT Use

On Monday, the Canadian province of British Columbia filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in a California court, alleging the U. S. AI company failed to report violent activity on its ChatGPT platform by the individual who carried out a mass school shooting in February. The shooting, which took place in the remote mining town of Tumbler Ridge, left multiple victims and drew national attention. Attorney General Niki Sharma had announced in July that the province would pursue legal action against OpenAI for its alleged role in the incident. The suit claims that OpenAI’s lack of monitoring or reporting contributed to the tragedy. The case seeks to hold the AI provider accountable for user‑generated violent content and to establish clearer responsibilities for tech firms in preventing extremist use of their services.
