New Zealand and Australia Accelerate Single Economic Market Integration
WHY IT MATTERS
The expanded regulatory alignment and trade mission to Brisbane position New Zealand firms to capture significant procurement opportunities from the 2032 Olympic Games, boosting regional economic integration and investment flows.
What happened
At the annual Closer Economic Relations Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Auckland, New Zealand Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay and Australian Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell announced a series of initiatives to deepen the Single Economic Market (SEM). The ministers launched a new Trans‑Tasman business‑government collaboration programme to implement the Australia‑New Zealand Leadership Forum’s proposals, targeting lower business costs through regulatory coherence, shared standards, supply‑chain integration, climate adaptation, defence, space, innovation and technology.
They also agreed to increase joint Trans‑Tasman standards by 30 percent, backed by a new Standards Development and Distribution Agreement.
A trade mission to Brisbane will help New Zealand firms tap the A$15 billion procurement opportunities linked to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
