Champi Re-Intensifies into Super Typhoon Ahead of Entry into PAR
WHY IT MATTERS
The super typhoon poses a threat to the northern and eastern parts of the Philippines, with potential flash floods and landslides, and heavy rain expected in extreme Northern Luzon.
What happened
Champi has re-intensified into a super typhoon with maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h and gustiness of up to 230 km/h. The super typhoon is located 1,515 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon and is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Tuesday morning or early afternoon.
Upon entry, it will be given the local name Rosal. PAGASA has warned of scattered rain and thunderstorms in Catanduanes, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar, with flash floods and landslides possible.
The super typhoon is likely to stay over the Philippine Sea, where it could strengthen further before gradually weakening. Tropical cyclone wind signals may be raised for the northern and eastern portions of Northern Luzon and parts of Bicol as early as Monday evening or Tuesday morning.
