ChatGPT, Reddit, Roblox Classified as Very Large Online Platforms Under EU Digital Services Act
WHY IT MATTERS
The ruling forces major AI and social media services to tighten content moderation and safeguard minors, potentially reshaping their operational models and exposing them to significant financial penalties for non‑compliance.
What happened
The European Commission announced that OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox will be designated as very large online platforms under the EU Digital Services Act. The classification imposes new obligations, including the removal of illegal content and enhanced protection of minors’ privacy and security.
Non‑compliance could trigger fines of up to 6 percent of each company’s global revenue.
The decision reflects Brussels’ effort to extend existing digital regulation to rapidly evolving AI services and other large platforms, ensuring stricter oversight of content and user safety across the EU.
