Chinese Automakers Target Europe’s Luxury Market with Tech‑Focused Premium Models
WHY IT MATTERS
It signals a new competitive front in Europe’s high‑end automotive market, where technology‑driven luxury could reshape consumer expectations and challenge long‑standing brand heritage.
What happened
At the Paris Motor Show, Chinese brands such as Changan’s Avatr, BYD’s Denza, Geely’s Zeekr and Aito unveiled premium electric vehicles that emphasize advanced driver‑assist, rapid charging and comfort features over traditional heritage. Avatr’s sedan and SUV will start at about €60,000 and include seat massagers, while Zeekr’s sales in Europe more than tripled to 9,525 units in the first nine months of 2026.
The companies plan a gradual rollout—Avatr will enter Spain, Britain and Denmark in 2027, then Germany in 2028—hoping to capture 72 % of the market for cars above $50,000 outside the U. S.
European luxury giants such as BMW, Mercedes‑Benz and Audi remain dominant, but the newcomers argue that “intelligent technology” is redefining luxury. Industry observers note that while Chinese automakers have built a foothold in Europe’s mainstream market, establishing credibility in the premium segment will require persistence and time.
