WHY IT MATTERS
The Jane Goodall Earth Medal recognizes the legacy of a renowned conservationist, highlighting the importance of continued efforts to protect the environment and promote truth in science communication.
What happened
The Starmus Festival has created a new award, the Jane Goodall Earth Medal, in honor of late conservationist Jane Goodall. Christiana Figueres, former executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, has been selected as the inaugural recipient.
Figueres joins the podcast to discuss the significance of the medal and her thoughts on science communication and truth. Astrophysicist Garik Israelian credits the idea for the medal to the Starmus advisory board, which includes Brian May and Peter Gabriel.
Israelian notes that Brian May was active in protecting animals through his foundation Save Me, and Peter Gabriel knew Jane Goodall well. The Starmus Festival will be held from October 17-22 in Tenerife, Spain, with a theme of 'The Search for Truth'.
