Cyprus Urges EU to Stand with Gulf States Amid Yemen Conflict
WHY IT MATTERS
The call highlights the EU’s potential role in Middle East security and underscores Cyprus’ push for deeper EU‑Gulf engagement amid rising regional tensions.
What happened
President Nikos Christodoulides called on the European Union to demonstrate solidarity with Gulf states as the Yemen war escalates, with missiles and drones striking Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries. He criticized the postponement of the EU‑GCC summit, scheduled to be hosted in Riyadh, arguing that the EU should be present in the region during “difficult times,” just as it has been in Ukraine.
Christodoulides noted that Cyprus’ energy minister was the only European minister to attend a recent Saudi energy meeting, and that the minister’s return was delayed by missile attacks on Riyadh’s airport.
He urged the EU to engage bilaterally with Gulf partners to reinforce security ties and support the region’s stability.
