Cyprus Leaders Agree to Attend Pyla Festival and Commit to Bicommunal Meetings
WHY IT MATTERS
The leaders’ renewed engagement signals a potential thaw in Cyprus’s long‑standing division, offering a chance to advance confidence‑building measures before regional pressures widen.
What happened
President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish‑Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman confirmed they will attend a bicommunal festival in Pyla on Saturday and will jointly attend upcoming meetings of the bicommunal technical committees on cultural heritage and youth, as well as the steering committee on the civil‑society consultative body. The pair also agreed to hold another one‑on‑one meeting next week.
Christodoulides said his 19 points for discussion on the Cyprus problem remain on the table, while Erhurman noted that six of the seven confidence‑building proposals endorsed by UN Secretary‑General António Guterres have already been accepted. The meeting, described by the United Nations as taking place in a positive atmosphere, follows a high‑level week in New York where progress was limited.
UN Cyprus envoy Maria Angela Holguin warned that the diplomatic window for dialogue is narrowing amid rising tensions in the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean.
