Cyprus President Hopes for Positive Outcomes Ahead of UN‑Facilitated Meeting with Turkish Cypriot Leader
WHY IT MATTERS
The meeting could advance reunification talks, improve cross‑community mobility, and strengthen regional stability and economic cooperation.
What happened
President Nikos Christodoulides said the United Nations has set dates for a joint meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman and UN Secretary‑General’s envoy Maria Angela Holguin. Christodoulides emphasized that he is attending the Tuesday session with a single goal: to secure positive developments.
He confirmed that the Greek Cypriot side is ready to announce the opening of four new crossing points if the Turkish Cypriot side responds favorably, and that other issues raised by the envoy—such as negotiation substance, methodology, and confidence‑building measures—will also be pursued.
Holguin is expected to arrive before the end of October, and the president declined to comment on the Turkish side’s stance.
