Cyprus President Reaffirms Reunification Window Remains Open
WHY IT MATTERS
The president’s stance signals Cyprus’s continued pursuit of reunification, affecting regional stability, EU relations, and the daily lives of residents in occupied areas.
What happened
President Nikos Christodoulides, speaking on the 66th anniversary of the Republic, said the “window of opportunity” for a Cyprus solution remains open. He pledged readiness to make concessions toward reunification but warned against artificial progress.
Christodoulides cited the UN’s work, the outgoing Secretary‑General’s willingness, the Security Council’s stance and EU support as reasons for optimism. He reiterated that ending the occupation and restoring full sovereignty is his top priority, while stressing the need to strengthen Cyprus’s deterrent capability and leverage its strategic position in the region.
The president also highlighted domestic economic gains and social measures, but noted inflation and energy costs still pressure households. He called for continued effort to lift the 37 % occupied territory and achieve a unified, inclusive homeland.
