Cloudflare Launches General Availability of Private Origin Services
WHY IT MATTERS
This enables internal services to benefit from Cloudflare’s security and performance controls without exposing them to the Internet, streamlining compliance and reducing attack surface.
What happened
Cloudflare has moved its private‑origin feature from closed beta to general availability. The service lets customers point a proxied A or AAAA DNS record at a private IP and have Cloudflare route traffic over the customer’s existing Cloudflare One connection.
The origin remains private, yet Cloudflare’s Web Application Firewall, caching, bot management, rate limiting, rewrite rules, and Workers run exactly as they do for public sites. The rollout removes the need for a public IP, firewall exception, or connector software on the origin.
Customers must enable the Private Origins entitlement and configure a return route for Cloudflare’s source ranges. The announcement also previews a future beta in early 2027 that will extend these controls to private‑to‑private traffic between clouds and data centers.
