Cyprus MPs Demand Answers Over Limassol Sea Pollution

The House environment committee held a session on Wednesday to confront the government about persistent pollution in the Limassol sea. MPs highlighted a conflict between the environment department’s claim that bi‑monthly inspections at 29 points show no problems and a sample taken on August 11 that was found contaminated by the mayor. The committee noted the issue has lingered for ten months and extends beyond Limassol’s borders. Calls were made for all sampling results to be released publicly, for an investigation into the Moni wastewater plant and the Dasoudi drainage pipeline, and for additional inspectors to cover sewage, industrial activity and illegal discharges. Committee members urged clearer coordination among monitoring agencies, questioned accountability, and criticized the state’s reactive approach. They demanded immediate action rather than further committee delays.
