Pokémon Champions Launches on Mobile, but Switch Still Needed for World Championship Play
WHY IT MATTERS
Players aiming for Pokémon World Championships must purchase a Switch, as mobile versions cannot compete at that level, making the console a necessary investment for serious competitors.
What happened
The Pokémon Champions battle simulator, which debuted on the Switch and Switch 2 in April, expanded to mobile devices in June, offering a nearly identical experience across platforms. Players can begin competitive play on their phones, choosing the convenience of touch controls over a physical controller.
However, the game’s cross‑platform design does not extend to the highest competitive tier. Participation in events such as the Pokémon World Championships requires the Switch version, as mobile players are ineligible for those tournaments.
Consequently, serious competitors must acquire a Switch to qualify for championship play, while casual players can enjoy the same mechanics on their smartphones.
