Ireland Boosts Official Development Aid Amid Global Humanitarian Shortfall
WHY IT MATTERS
Ireland’s increased ODA strengthens global humanitarian response, ensuring aid reaches those most in need and upholds the country’s reputation as a leader in development and poverty reduction.
What happened
Ireland’s 2027 Budget has increased Official Development Assistance (ODA) by €14 million, a move welcomed by Concern Worldwide. The charity’s CEO, Dominic Crowley, highlighted that the 2026 Global Humanitarian Overview now estimates more than 257 million people worldwide need aid, yet only 41 % of the €35 billion required has been funded.
Crowley warned that this funding gap leaves millions excluded from response planning and many others uncounted. He praised Ireland’s continued commitment to a values‑based approach to development, noting that 74 % of the Irish public support sustained ODA.
Last year, Irish Aid helped Concern reach over three million people in 22 countries.
