Brazil's Senate Approves Changes to Working Hours
WHY IT MATTERS
The changes are expected to benefit 26.8 million workers, including 22 million formal-sector workers and 4.8 million informal workers, and have been supported by 73% of Brazilians in a recent survey.
What happened
Brazil's Senate has approved a proposed constitutional amendment to abolish the 6x1 work schedule, replacing it with a 5x2 system where workers are entitled to two paid days off per week for every five days worked. The amendment also reduces the maximum workweek from 44 to 40 hours.
Companies will have 60 days to implement the changes, with a total transition period of 14 months.
The new rules will not apply to employees with a college degree earning above BRL 21,000, who will only be entitled to reduced hours at their employer's discretion.
