UN Nature Targets Review Looms Amid Concerns of Delayed Progress
WHY IT MATTERS
The review's outcome will determine the effectiveness of global efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, with significant implications for ecosystems and the planet's future.
What happened
Countries are set to meet in Armenia this month to review progress towards meeting key nature targets by 2030. A UN report warns that nations are falling short on 22 of 23 targets, which focus on restoring ecosystems, increasing nature finance, and reducing harmful subsidies.
The report will inform the global progress review at the COP17 biodiversity summit, which will take place from October 19-30.
Unless action accelerates rapidly, the ambitions will not be achieved in time for the 2030 deadline.
