EU Leaders Offer Solidarity to Greece and Cyprus Over Turkey-Libya Maritime Deal
WHY IT MATTERS
The maritime deal between Turkey and Libya has significant implications for the region's stability and resource sharing, and the EU's stance on the issue highlights its commitment to upholding international law and protecting the rights of its member states.
What happened
European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed solidarity with Greece and Cyprus after Libya's parliament ratified a maritime boundary agreement with Turkey. The EU leaders stated that the agreement infringes upon the sovereign rights of third states and does not comply with the law of the sea.
They reaffirmed the EU's position against any outside interference in Libya.
Greece and Cyprus consider the agreement to be illegal, while Turkey views it as an important step towards protecting its shared rights and interests in the eastern Mediterranean.
