Marine One Helicopter Fails to Contact ATC, Near Miss with Passenger Jet
WHY IT MATTERS
The incident highlights the need for reliable communication protocols for presidential transport and could prompt revisions to ATC procedures.
What happened
A Sikorsky VH‑3D Sea King helicopter, known as Marine One and carrying former President Donald Trump, did not establish contact with air traffic control moments before departing. The failure to communicate contributed to a close encounter with a passenger jet earlier this month.
The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report noting the communication breakdown.
The incident is now under investigation by the NTSB, which will review the helicopter’s procedures and ATC coordination to determine corrective actions.
