What happened
A criminal investigation in Florida has cleared Sloth World of charges related to the deaths of 57 wild-caught sloths. The Orange County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) investigated the facility after it closed in April.
The OCSO report found that the deaths were likely due to a multifactorial animal health incident, rather than neglect or improper care. Multiple veterinarians interviewed by the OCSO stated that the sloths were in extremely poor condition, dehydrated, malnourished, and emaciated.
Autopsies revealed lesions across multiple organ systems, including pneumonia, bone marrow depletion, and degeneration of the brain and spinal cords. A veterinarian forensic pathologist suggested that chronic stress may have contributed to the animals' rapid decline in health.
